The philosophy of the Spotswood Tennis program is to provide a comprehensive tennis experience, complete with a summer training session and a fall season, thus maintaining a competitive level of performance in the classroom and on the field of play. The foundation of the Spotswood Tennis program is based on work ethic and learning. It is the goal of the coaching staff to provide individualized attention in the development of each player in the program.
Rich Gawlak was hired by Spotswood Public Schools in September 2009, after graduating from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a Bachelors of Science Degree-Teaching. Mr. Gawlak’s Spotswood coaching career began during winter season of the 2009/10 school year, where he helped guide the Boy’s Freshman Basketball Team to a 12-9 Record, along with winning the Bound Brook Holiday Tournament. Mr. Gawlak has also coached Girls Junior Varsity Basketball (2011-Present), Girls Varsity Tennis (2012-Present) and Boy’s Junior Varsity Baseball (2010-2011) during his 4 years in Spotswood. In 2012, the Girls tennis team qualified for the NJSIAA State Tournament for the first time in the past 6 years.
In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Mr. Gawlak graduated from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South in 2003, as a three sport Varsity Letter winner in Football, Basketball and Baseball. During his time as a high school athlete, Mr. Gawlak was named a Baseball America/Baseball Factory High School 2nd Team Pre-Season All American Catcher (2002) and helped lead West Windsor-Plainsboro South’s Baseball team to a Division Title, Conference Title, Mercer County Tournament Championship and a Group IV Sectional Championship(2002). When his high school career concluded, Mr. Gawlak enrolled at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) where he played baseball for the Vikings. Mr. Gawlak was named a 2nd team Region XIX Catcher during the 2005 season. Mr. Gawlak graduated from MCCC in the Spring of 2006 with his Associates Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences, and then enrolled at The College of New Jersey.
While at TCNJ, Mr. Gawlak excelled as a Catcher for the baseball program, earning the Coaches Award/Team MVP and being named a Rawlings American Baseball Coaches Association Gold Glove winner, and the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Player of the Week Award during the 2008 Season. After his playing career at TCNJ ended, he was hired to the TCNJ Baseball Staff, serving as the Catching Coach/Pitch Caller during the 2009 season. TCNJ’s baseball program went on to win the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in the 2009 season, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Tournament. Mr. Gawlak currently serves on the TCNJ baseball staff as the Bench Coach/Catching Coach/Pitching Coach.
