Program Philosophy
The philosophy of the boy’s basketball program is to ensure that our student athletes compete at the highest level in both the classroom and on the court. Our expectations of the Spotswood players are to be positive role models both inside the school and in the community and always foster positive sportsmanship on the court.
Coaching Biography
Coach Steve Mate has been the head coach of the Spotswood High School Men’s Basketball team for twenty eight years. Over the past twenty eight years, Coach Mate has led the Men’s Basketball team to eight Christmas Tournament Championships, two Division titles and 21 State playoff appearances. He is the Spotswood All Time Career Win Leader, approaching 400 wins, and holds the school record for most wins in a season for two seasons (21). Coach Mate has been named the Blue Division Coach of the Year eight times and was awarded Coach of the Year by the Home News Tribune for the 2009-2010 season. In 2018, Coach Mate was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
